For a century, forecasts have been strongest where observations are dense, and thinnest over the ocean, the tropics and much of the global South. DeepSky is built to observe the whole sky: five instruments on one spacecraft, flown as a constellation, reading the full column of air. The same early warning, wherever the storm is forming.
Microwave Sounder
Reveals the atmosphere hidden beneath cloud cover, delivering the temperature and moisture observations that help forecasters predict storms earlier and with greater confidence
Precipitation Radar
Precipitation radar sends pulses straight down and times the returning echoes to reveal the storm layer by layer—showing precipitation intensity through the column, the melting layer, and storm-top height. Unlike passive instruments, it resolves a narrow three-dimensional slice of the storm.
Infrared / visible Imaging
The imager watches weather happen. Visible imagery maps cloud structure in daylight, while thermal infrared measures cloud-top and surface brightness temperature day and night. Comparing repeated frames reveals motion, derives cloud-top winds, and detects rapidly cooling cloud tops as storms grow.
GNSS Radio Occultation
GNSS radio occultation measures how navigation signals bend as they graze Earth’s atmosphere. That refraction reveals high-resolution vertical profiles of temperature, pressure and humidity through clouds and in any weather—from the stratosphere down toward the surface.
GNSS reflectometry
A GNSS signal reflects from the wind-roughened ocean and is captured by a low-orbit receiver. The shape and strength of the reflected signal reveal surface roughness, which is used to retrieve ocean-surface wind speed—even through heavy rain.
